New Class of Medications for Insomnia

The new drug, suvorexant, acts on orexins in the brain to improve sleep.  This is the first medication to block orexin, a neurotransmitter deep within the brain.  It allowed patients stayed asleep longer with decreased awakenings during the night.  Suvorexant was well tolerated without major side effects.

In my  northshore clinic, I combine optimization of sleep and pain management.
