Does Exercise Protect the Brain?
A recent study published in The Annals of Internal Medicine, revealed on associations between physical fitness and decrease risk for dementia. Dr. Laura F. DeFina, the lead author, stated that middle age patients in the 20% highest level of fitness, have 36% reduction in dementia risk. The findings were adjusted for smoking, diabetes, cholesterol and other health factors. The reason for decrease dementia risk is not clear. Is exercise somehow protecting the brain? Hopefully additional research will help improve our understanding of this relationship.
