Migraine & Changes in Brain MRI
Migraine can be associated with changes in MRI of the brain. These brain changes are called deep white matter hyperintensities (DWMH). Research published in the November 14 Jama followed a group of women with migraine. The MRI changes were not found to be associated with cognitive decline or decreased mental ability. But, women with more severe migraines had more DWMH. Additional research is warranted to understand the significance of DWMH. These brain changes may be associated with vessel abnormalities and stroke that is known to be increased in migraine patients.
